Please encourage your child, as I do, to keep reading! The reading has declined since we have moved to recording AR points instead of # of pages read! Instead of having team pennants, we have individual pennants and are keeping track of individual AR points during the month of October. Students are allowed to take AR tests anytime throughout the day!

On Tuesday, March 3, Chris Jenkins and Paul Gorzlancyk from The Dream Tree, Inc. will present a highly interactive storytelling and environmental education program for the 3K through 4th grade students in the gym. This assembly is one of the special events for National Lutheran Schools Week. We are collecting $2.00 from each child by Friday, February 27th. Guests and visitors are welcome.
On Friday, February 27th, we will be having Fun Friday Festivities! Would you like to help? You can help by donating snack items to be "bought" by the students. If you haven't heard already, each student has been given $100 to spend during the Fun Friday Festivities! In additiion, the class has been given $1000 to spend on group activities that day!
So, how does this work? Read on...
A "repeat" question or statement will cost each student one dollar from their wallet AND one dollar from the class fund. At the end of the month, each student will be able to spend the money they have left in their "wallet" on their food and drink items. This is where YOU can help! Would you be willing to donate anything like soda, juice boxes, granola bars, fruit snacks, candy bars, cookies, fruit...any single item that a student could buy to eat or drink during the Fun Friday Festivities?! I would really appreciate the help!
The class will decide together what they want to buy with the money left in the class fund. The prices of some suggestions from the students are:
* Movie (Alvin & The Chipmunks), $250
*5 Divergent Thinking Rounds, $50
*Arts and Crafts afternoon, $250
*Extra Recess, $150
*An hour of playing Board Games, $125
*Musical Chairs, $50/round
*Homework Pass, $200
After the first week of February, we currently have $972 left in the class fund!!
Our Valentine’s Day Party will be Friday, February 13th at 2:15 PM. Mrs. Nargis will be calling to remind you if you are “on duty”! Anyone who would like to join the party is welcome! If you need a list of classmates, please refer to the back of your Parent's Handbook that you received at the beginning of the school year. We will be decorating bags in school prior to the party!

You've Been Challenged!
Wednesday, February 11th is our 100th day of school. The first grade is leading chapel that day and is issuing a challenge to each and every student to fill his or her chapel envelope with 100 cents. Are you up to the challenge? No matter how you look at it, the winner is Jesus!
This week we learned how to write a limerick poem. A limerick is a poem of 5 lines where lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme! Enjoy these "Lovely Limericks" by several of our 3rd grade friends!

There was a girl who had a valentine,
she wanted to go to a party sometime.
On February 14th she started to cry,
she cried and cried she didn't know why!
The girl said to her mom "I love you all the time."
by Madison
Love is special, so are you.
Is that something you never knew?
So send a Valentine,
Make it say, "Be mine."
So stare at the sky it is so blue.

My frog loved Valentine's Day.
But his birthday is in May.
So the frog looked at his chart,
it had a red heart.
So he said... "that's okay."

I love my family, they are the best!
Other than my brothers, no one is a pest!
All we share is love,
Except when we shove!
Our love would pass the test!

There once was a turtle on Valentine's Day,
who lived in Tampa Bay.
Once he opened his heart,
it no longer fell apart.
Now he loved Valentine's Day.

My Christmas Vacation
by Cate
Mrs. Voigt's Class
Over Christmas vacation my family and I watched Christmas movies and played games. My sister, Amelia and I played in the snow. I found an icicle. It was very big. I acted like it was a guitar. I played a lot of soccer games and opened many presents. My family watched the ball drop. It was very fun!

Bethlehem Savior Messiah
Since we were "snowed out" of our Christmas Party on December 19th, we changed our party to an Epiphany party and celebrated on Tuesday, December 6th! We weren't able to do everything we had originally planned but we did create a great party for the students!
One of the PTL fundraisers at Our Redeemer is the Annual Basketball Tournament! To make this weekend a success for the PTL, all students are asked to donate a drink item that will then be sold at the concession stand. The third graders are asked to bring in a 12-pack of regular Coke. If you are willing, please bring in a 12 pack, by Tuesday, January 13th. If atleast 75% of the third graders bring in a 12 pack, then Mrs. Van Dellen will supply both classes with a "pop" party! (Yes, it is called pop where Mrs. Van Dellen comes from!)
If you did not see our Stocking Surprises Bulletin Board you will have until January 16th to check it out! Each student made a stocking and put a "surprise" to be earned inside the stocking! After collecting 5 bonus points for good behavior, Mrs. Van Dellen randomly picks a stocking and the students get that surprise! Some of the surprises they earned have been: gum day (date to be determined), student gift exchange(pixie presents), and an extra long recess! Some of the surprises yet to be earned are: hot chocolate afternoon, ice cream party, game day, afternoon snack break and no homework day! We all love GOOD BEHAVIOR!
Christmas
by Jessica
Mrs. Voigt's Class
Christmas is the day of Jesus' birth! I like Christmas because we decorate the tree, bake cookies, watch movies, and go skiing. Also, I wrap presents. Sometimes, we go driving to see the lights. My favorite time is skiing with the Willer family. I enjoy baking cookies and eating the dough. It tastes good! I like Christmas!
Dragon Story
by Kennedi
Mrs. Voigt's Class
If I met a dragon, we will fly all night. We will play games before I go to school. My dragon can get me to school on time. I will feed him. He will be strong and healthy.
Please join us in Uncovering the True Meaning of Christmas as we present "The First Leon" this coming Wednesday, December 10th, at 6:30 PM. All 3rd - 5th grade students are asked to meet in their classrooms at 6:15. We hope you will enjoy this Children's Christmas Musical that we have prepared in order to worship HIM during this Advent season. We have spent a great deal of time working on this service – we hope you all will be able to come!
Instead of exchanging gifts in the classroom, we are collecting baby items for A Place of Refuge. This Lutheran ministry is for unwed mothers who are expecting babies and don’t have anyone to help them. Any baby item, big or small, is greatly appreciated!
This Monday, December 15th, will be our special lunch to supplement our food unit in Spanish class. Each student has been assigned a food item to bring in for our lunch. Students will NOT need a lunch on that day, only their assigned food! Please note that it is an “American” lunch, the students have been learning the Spanish names for our American foods.

My Astronaut Report
by Payton
Mrs. Voigt's Class
I am an astronaut going to the moon. I need to bring a helmet, spaceship, sun visor, food, water, spacesuit, and a shovel. There is no gravity and no water on the moon. The first two astronauts who landed on the moon were Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. It is hard work to be an astronaut because you need a lot of gear. There are 9 planets in space.

If I Ran for President
by Jolan
Mrs. Voigt's Class
If I ran for president, I would help our country be a better place. I would write the new laws for our country. There would be lower taxes. I would make speeches. I could help the hungry people and the earth. My home is the White House.
Turtle Report
by Naomi
Mrs. Voigt's Class
Turtles use their shells to keep them safe. The snapping turtle can get bigger than one foot. Amazing! Every turtle has a shell on it. Most baby turtles don't survive. The leatherback turtle is the biggest. Turtles are cold-blooded animals.
Your Vote Counts!
The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders of Our Redeemer welcomed two area Lutheran Schools to join them in hearing a presentation given by Milwaukee Alderman, Jim Bohl. On Tuesday, October 21st, Immanuel, Brookfield and St. Peter-Immanuel gathered with us to hear about “The Election Process: How Your Vote Counts.” A few of the questions that Alderman Bohl answered were the following:
ü How old do you need to be to vote?
ü Which group of citizens is most likely to vote?
ü Who can vote?
ü How do you effectively run for office?
ü How is the Federal Government organized?
Did you know…We actually have 51 separate elections for the President!?

Grandparent’s Day
Grandparent’s Day is next Friday – we are all so excited! Students have made “You are the Apple of My Eye” cards and have written a haiku poem for their grandparent on the inside. During class with the grandparents, I will teach the lesson again on how to write a haiku poem. Then, grandparents will be given stationery to write a haiku for their grandchild!
We will also be making bookmarks with our favorite Bible verse on it to exchange with our grandparents that day! Oh, the excitement never ends!

Autumn is RED
like leaves that I always step on when I go outside in autumn,
barns I see when I go to the country,
and fire that I make when I'm cold.
Autumn is ORANGE
like sunsets I see every night before the sun goes down,
pumpkins that I pick with my friends on field trips,
and with my family every October on Holloween day!
PTL OPEN HOUSE
Please come to our Open House sponsored by our PTL on October 6, 2008. After a brief introductory program in the sanctuary, parents are invited to browse their student’s classroom and “Meet the Teacher” if you haven’t already!! Please join us! Also, the teachers are serving dinner before the meeting to all new families at our school! If you are new to OR, please be sure to RSVP for this dinner so that we can make connections with you!
we will begin a Reading Unit on Charlotte’s Web on October 6th. We will be reading the book, doing reading activities, constructing a paper mache pig, and ending our unit with a trip to Wisconsin Lutheran College to see a play of Charlotte’s Web. We will need everyone to bring in a one gallon milk jug for our pig. Please save your jug and send it to school so we can begin the pig on October 7th.
