Religion / Memory

The fifth grade Religion curriculum will focus on Bible stories from the Old Testament through Pentecost. We have a unit covering the life of Martin Luther and the foundations of the Lutheran Church.
We will also discuss issues
facing our fifth graders in the
world today, emphasizing proper choices (W.W.J.D.?).
Memory
The Memory curriculum focuses on Martin Luther’s small catechism as we will study the Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Sacrament of Holy Baptism and Sacrament of the Altar.

Math

Students should enter fifth grade mathematics enabled with basic
skills in adding. subtracting, multiplication (up to 9x9) and
division (up to 81 divided by 9).
These concepts will be tested and graded on a daily basis, as mastering these basic facts in a “flash” will
greatly ease the difficulty of
fifth grade mathematics!
Flash cards are a great idea for car rides, even to and from school.
Spanish

Fifth graders receive Spanish instruction twice a week.
Art

The Arts Attack program will used in 5th grade. This is video-based art curriculum.
Language Arts

English curriculum: Parts of speech, grammar, Six Traits of Writing.
Our Spelling curriculum is Sitton Spelling. Instruction focuses on spelling well in writing, not just on weekly Spelling Tests.
In reading we use a novel approach. The students will read the following trade books and a variety of strategies will be implemented such as: vocabulary, context clues, predicting outcomes, characterization, story-mapping , gerneralizing, etc.
The Cay
Spy for the Night Riders
Sign of the Beaver

Students will be placed in Literature circles twice throughout the year.
Social Studies

We will focus on United States
History from early explorers through
the Civil War. An additional Unit covers Medieval times.
Science

Our main focus will be on plant life and the solar system. The majority of the Science projects will be concentrated on “Activities Integrating Math and Science” (AIMS).
We will also enjoy learning more about God’s creation through United Streaming videos
