Ways to Support Your Child's School Experiences
This is personally given to families at home visit time. It is always worthwhile to reread.
Ways to Support Your Child’s School Experiences
1. Pray with and for your child, our school, its staff, and our other families each day. Pray before school each day—before you leave the house and/or the car.
2. Attend church regularly with your child. Take your child to Sunday School and Caraway Street—then you can attend a Bible class!
3. Have family devotion time. It may take some time to find a time and format that works well. Don’t give up! We have devotion book bags for your family to borrow, just ask me and I would love to share them with your family!!
4. Let your child see you ask for, receive, and be thankful for forgiveness when you make a mistake—both from the Lord and from others. What YOU MODEL makes a lifelong impact on your child.
5. Find time regularly to talk with your child about what’s important to him or her and to find out what may be on your child’s mind.
6. Read to and with your child as often as you can—even if it’s just for a few minutes. Encourage your child to read for fun. Talk with your child about what he or she is reading. Let your child see you reading newspapers, magazines, and books.
7. Write notes to your child about anything at all for no reason at all. Encourage your child to write back to you.
8. Monitor television viewing.
9. Your child needs plenty of rest, nutritious meals, and a good deal of physical activity to be alert and ready to learn. This may seem obvious, but it also takes a conscious effort on the part of the whole family to make happen.
10. Don’t underestimate the power of encouragement! Praise your child’s efforts, give support when limits are stretched, and remind your child that mistakes are learning opportunities. The Lord is forever giving us “second chances.” Should we do any less for our children?
