We had a great trip to the zoo, even though it was cold. The program on Homes and Hideaways was very interesting, the zoo was not crowded, and the animals were active. Thanks to Mr. Wright, Mr. Hanson, Mrs. Brophy, Mr. Brown and Mrs. Meyer-Brown for coming with us.
CONGRATULATIONS to Aidan, who will be getting a limo ride to Culvers on Monday, 11/24. Aidan was one of the top sellers for the pizza sale. Many thanks to all who participated in this major fundraiser. Without your participation, the PTL is unable to fund many improvements to the school.
Please consider attending the Internet Safety presentation on Monday, 11/17 at 7:00 pm. This program will be led by a liaison for the Tosa police department. Come early and have coffee with the principal!
Next week, we will be taking the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Please see that your child is well-rested and eats breakfast. This is their first experience with this type of test. Encourage them to do their best.
Remember Consecration Sunday on November 23. We sing in the 9:30 service, so please attend church and stay for the brunch that day.
We will be gathering food during the holidays to donate to the food pantry. Second graders are asked to bring canned chicken, tuna, or salmon this week.
This week in second grade we –
- Worked on the /ou/ sound, compound words, y at the end of a word, apostrophe use, and proofreading. Words to work on for next week are: water, may, use, find, way, people, its, make, more, their, there, are
- Read Exploring Parks with Ranger Dockett , learned the hard and soft sounds of g and c, fact and opinion, wrote commands, and worked on paragraph writing – especially main idea and details.
- Found that God planned for light to help us see.
- Traded pennies for dimes, measured to the nearest inch, and added 10 to a two-digit number.
- Made an apples to applesauce flow chart in Social Studies.
- Made placemats for Consecration Sunday.
- Studied Deborah, Gideon, and David as they put their trust in the Lord, and were led by Him to be great leaders.
Memory Work – due on Thursday, 11/20

Mrs. Denise Kegley is a five-year veteran second grade teacher. She enjoys this age level and couldn't be happier! The children of this age are so enthusiastic for Jesus, eager to learn and enjoy the occasional joke. Mrs. Kegley has previously taught first grade and the four-year-old program at Our Redeemer Lutheran. During her years at Our Redeemer, Mrs. Kegley earned her colloquy from Concordia University Wisconsin (2003) and her Master's Degree in early childhood education from CUW (1999). Before joining the Our Redeemer staff, she taught at Oklahoma Avenue Lutheran in Milwaukee and Good Shepherd Lutheran in East Troy, WI. Mrs. Kegley's home congregation is Our Redeemer Lutheran in Delavan, Wisconsin. Mrs. Kegley graduated from UW-Whitewater with a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education way back in 1990.
Mrs. Kegley's husband is Dustin and he is a City of Milwaukee employee. They were married in 1993 at Our Redeemer Lutheran in Delavan. They enjoy their family, bowling, movies and gardening. They have a spoiled cat named Marble or perhaps the cat owns them, it depends on whom you ask!
Mrs. Kegley plays the bagpipes in two local bands: Celtic Nations Pipes and Drums and the Greater Milwaukee Fire and Police Pipes and Drums. She served on the executive board for the Fire and Police band for five years as treasurer and then as secretary. While playing with Celtic Nations Pipes and Drums, Mrs. Kegley helped the band earn two first place trophies and a third place trophy in 2008. When she isn't grading papers, you will find her playing her bagpipes!
Mrs. Kegley also plays viola. She spent many years in the Beloit-Janesville Symphony Orchestra and the Menomonee Falls Symphony. Now she plays with the Our Redeemer Morning Praise Band and any additional services when requested. It is a joy to serve the Lord through music! God gives the heart a voice to sound its joy and calls it music. God gives all gifts and talents, He has trusted in Mrs. Kegley to share that joy with the people around her.
