Dear Parents, October 24, 2008

We are approaching one of the busiest times for second grade. We go from Reformation Day, into Student Led Conferences, achievement testing, and finally to Advent Service practices! It is a busy time and we come out of knowing with God’s help everything is POSSIBLE!

RELIGION- The Ten Commandments and The Golden Calf were our lessons to finish our unit, The Lord Has a Plan. We had a great Chapel led by Mr. Kohlmeier. He had us singing some wonderful praise songs! He also taught us how Jesus Christ is our bridge to God. Please remember our Memory Verses are the Ten Commandments for next week. See the attached sheet which lists them. We are really working to memorize all ten and give them by Wednesday next week

We have our zoo trip on November 11. Just planning ahead, with the short school weeks coming up I want to remind you, everyone needs to pack a lunch, we will be eating at the ZOO! Dress for rainy weather if it is raining. All parents who volunteered their chaperoning services are scheduled to attend the trip!!

READING- Our October Book-it! goal was to complete one (some have turned in two already) daily Book Log and the Book Report form (that was due by the end of October). Most everyone has done this, I am so proud of them all! Most will find the attached coupon for Pizza Hut on my letter today. Our goal for November is to finish another book log and complete another Book Report form, which you will receive next week. Also attached is a another letter to read, it outlines the coupons from McDonald’s for you to use. Parents can be certain they are completed and then go and use them right away! J

MATH- We wrote tally marks, counted by 5’s, identified horizontal, vertical and oblique, divided a whole into fractions (1/2, ¼, 1/8), and learned our addition facts of sums of 10.

SPELLING- LIKE HIM SEE TIME COULD were our words this week. There was also proofreading words, correctly adding –s, -ed, -ing to root words, bossy letter e work, and more homophone/homonym work.

SOCIAL STUDIES- We learned about landforms, different sized communities, and the land and water areas on maps.

SCIENCE- We discussed various habitats and then reviewed and tested on the unit: Interactions of Living Things

ART- We made a project with tarted a project on a circus wagon.

Mrs. Kegley

Mrs. Denise Kegley is a five-year veteran second grade teacher. She enjoys this age level and couldn't be happier! The children of this age are so enthusiastic for Jesus, eager to learn and enjoy the occasional joke. Mrs. Kegley has previously taught first grade and the four-year-old program at Our Redeemer Lutheran. During her years at Our Redeemer, Mrs. Kegley earned her colloquy from Concordia University Wisconsin (2003) and her Master's Degree in early childhood education from CUW (1999). Before joining the Our Redeemer staff, she taught at Oklahoma Avenue Lutheran in Milwaukee and Good Shepherd Lutheran in East Troy, WI. Mrs. Kegley's home congregation is Our Redeemer Lutheran in Delavan, Wisconsin. Mrs. Kegley graduated from UW-Whitewater with a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education way back in 1990.
Mrs. Kegley's husband is Dustin and he is a City of Milwaukee employee. They were married in 1993 at Our Redeemer Lutheran in Delavan. They enjoy their family, bowling, movies and gardening. They have a spoiled cat named Marble or perhaps the cat owns them, it depends on whom you ask!
Mrs. Kegley plays the bagpipes in two local bands: Celtic Nations Pipes and Drums and the Greater Milwaukee Fire and Police Pipes and Drums. She served on the executive board for the Fire and Police band for five years as treasurer and then as secretary. While playing with Celtic Nations Pipes and Drums, Mrs. Kegley helped the band earn two first place trophies and a third place trophy in 2008. When she isn't grading papers, you will find her playing her bagpipes!
Mrs. Kegley also plays viola. She spent many years in the Beloit-Janesville Symphony Orchestra and the Menomonee Falls Symphony. Now she plays with the Our Redeemer Morning Praise Band and any additional services when requested. It is a joy to serve the Lord through music! God gives the heart a voice to sound its joy and calls it music. God gives all gifts and talents, He has trusted in Mrs. Kegley to share that joy with the people around her.
