We will be piloting a new idea in the area of memory work in Third Grade this year. The Bible reminds us that “Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” We want our students to use God’s Word as a lamp and a light in their daily lives. To that end, our students will commit to memory nine foundational bible verses. It is our hope and prayer that our students not only commit theses nine verses to memory for a day, a week, or a year, but rather for a lifetime! We want to equip our students with a solid foundation in God’s Word, so that as adults, they can follow God’s direction to “call upon Me in the day of trouble.” How awesome it is to know that we can always call upon God!
On the back side of this paper is the monthly memory verse schedule. This is how it works! Once a week (usually Thursday or Friday), students will be asked to recite the memory verse assigned for that month. They will be reciting the same verse for the entire month. Then, starting in October, they will also be asked to recite one other verse from a previous month. In December, for example, the will recite December’s verse each week and then will be asked to recite a verse from Sept., Oct., or Nov. Prayerfully, at the end of the school year, they will have all nine verses committed to memory.
As the verses are memorized each month, a poster will be made and displayed in the classroom so that we can continually review theses verses ALL year long. We have so many opportunities to practice memorizing Scripture. We can practice it while waiting in line, we can recite it in our morning prayer, we can use it for our lunch time prayer, we can quiz each other when our work is done - the list is endless! Additionally, these nine verses will be used school wide as monthly theme verses. Posters will be made also to be displayed throughout the school hallways.
