Religion
Daily devotions with singing and prayer time. Exploring BIBLE truths. Weekly Chapel service with Chapel buddies. Weekly memory verses. Study of Martin Luther and the Reformation. Opportunities for student-led devotions and/or prayer. A special chapel service is conducted by the second grade on Wednesday, April 29. Development of Christian friendships. Religion textbooks published by CPH, new version this year!
Reading, Writing and Language Arts
Daily phonics practice. Read-at-home evening homework and monthly book reports. Leveled, small group teaching to individualize reading instruction. Writer’s workshop and whole class writing mini-lessons. Read-aloud stories by teacher. Shared reading opportunities with partners, small groups and whole class. Accelerated Reader program is available for all students. Our reading series is published by Houghton-Mifflin. Implementing best practices from The Daily 5 approach to reading instruction by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.
Spelling
Sitton Spelling curriculum is the mastery of “Forever Words” used in conjunction with Word Wall Work (emphasis on high frequency words). Students are expected to master “forever” words through correctly spelling and using the “forever” words in their writing. Weekly word family review (spelling patterns like _at: bat, cat, that, hat). “Forever words” are extended into practice work with prefixes, suffixes, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms and contractions.
Handwriting
Instruction in upper and lower case letters using the Zaner-Bloser handwriting approach
(straight up and down with circles and sticks). Emphasis on correct letter formation
(top and down), correct pencil grip, legibility and ease in writing. Our series is from
Educators Publishing Service.
Math
Daily homework due the next day, fact practice due the next day. Multiplication and Division fact families. Fractions and Decimals. Problem solving strategies. Right, acute, obtuse angles.
Social Studies
Our book is titled: People and Places. Units taught by Mrs. Kegley are: Where We Live, Our Earth, Working Together, Our Country Today, Our Country Long Ago, People and Places in History. This is a new series by Scott Foresman!
Science
Our series is from Houghton Mifflin. Units taught by Miss Young are: Plants and Animals. Environments and Energy, Treasures from the Earth, Patterns in the Sky, Matter and Energy, Motion and Forces.
Spanish
Instruction two times a week of the language and culture, taught by Mrs. Maldonado.
Music
Instruments, simple note reading, music appreciation and singing,
taught by Mrs. Seefeld. Children must sing for scheduled church services,
Advent Service on Wednesday, December 7th at 6:30pm
Scheduled church services we sing for will be printed in the Parent Handbook.
Spring Musical for grades 1-4 is April 19th.
2nd Grade Chapel presentation sometime in May.
Physical Education
Large motor skills, proper use/care of P.E. apparatus and games with simple rules. Taught three times a week by Mr. Schroeder.
Art
Arts Attack is a sequential arts instruction series we use through all of the grades at Our Redeemer.
Field Trips and Special Presentations
The 2nd Grade has the following field trips scheduled:
Milwaukee County Zoo “Homes and Hideaways”
Schlitz Audubon Center for Maple Sugaring in March
First Stage play in the spring!
Wauwatosa Historical Society’s Schoolhouse at Kneeland-Walker House in May
Total costs for the field trips will be around 45.00 per student this school year.
Snacks
Nutritious, easy-to-eat snacks may be brought to school for one or both of our snack times: 9:30am and 2:15pm. Water bottles WITH TIGHT LIDS may be used when the weather is hot. Discuss snack and water break needs with your child and decide according to their needs. Birthday snacks do not need to follow the nutritious rule.
